VIDEO: Local film Stroomop in theatres this Women’s Day

Get your mothers, sisters and girlfriends ready for one powerful film on Woman's Day.

The wait is finally over. Ivan Botha and Donnalee Roberts are proud to announce the release of the trailer of their latest project, Stroomop.

This exciting adventure is about more than just life and death.

It tells the story of five women – Lana, Vivian, Adrie, Diona and Nixie – who are being tossed about by life’s rough waters and drowning in their own lives.

Coincidence takes them on an adventure on the Orange River. Here the unthinkable happens when their boat capsizes, the river guide goes missing and they find themselves in a battle for survival in the wilderness.

The movie, filmed on the Orange River, near Onseepkans in the Northern Cape and around Johannesburg, is complemented by a strong cast that includes Donnalee Roberts, Simoné Nortmann, Chanelle de Jager, Ilse Klink and Carla Classen.

“Sometimes you will have to swim against the current to discover that you are more than enough and that you possess everything you need to overcome what the river of life may float your way,” says Botha and Roberts about the message behind this inspiring film.

De Jager, who plays Adrie in Stroomop and who attended school in Pretoria, also spoke to Rekord about her experience.

“What attracted me to this film is that all the women in the script are everyday women. The epic adventures in which they find themselves are filled with complications and excitement, which supplies the viewer with loads of suspense, drama and comedy,” De Jager explains.

“Adrie, my character, is the mother of three very busy children, whom she loves dearly. But she sometimes feels as if she is drowning, and that she needs to recharge her batteries.”

Unlike their previous blockbusters, Pad na jou Hart and Vir Altyd, the actors do not appear on screen together this time. Although they jointly dreamt about, wrote and produced the film, Roberts plays the female lead while Botha makes his directorial debut.s

“Ten years ago, on the set of Bakgat, I knew that I wanted to direct, but I wanted to learn more before taking on this challenge. Tom Marais and I made a promise to one another on the set of Bakgat 1 that he would do the cinematography when I direct my first film. Ten years on and here we are,” says Botha.

The message behind Stroomop resonated with Botha and Roberts, but definitely struck a chord with its mostly female cast as well.

“This is life, it is raw. What I loved and learned from this film, is that it shows the viewers that you are never alone when you go through something difficult,” explains De Jager.

So, if you want to celebrate Women’s Month to the fullest, get to the nearest cinema with your girlfriends to see Stroomop, a true testament to women’s unique obstacles and how they can be dealt with together.
