2018 World Choir Games officially underway

Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga officially launched the 2018 World Choir Games in the metro on Wednesday night.

This happened at Sun Arena, Times Square Menlyn.

The biennial event brings together cultures and nations from all over the world to meet and sing together, becoming the world’s largest international choir competition.

Amateur choirs will take part in the 11-day event, performing in competitions and friendship concerts, attending workshops and master classes, and participating in mass choral projects.

This the 10th edition of this prestigious event.

It coincides with the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela, for whom music was a “great blessing”.

The games will see 16 500 participants with family and friends arrive in Tshwane for a fortnight of music and song, from 4 to 14 July.

The World Choir Games is held every two years and is the largest choir competition on the international calendar.

This year, more than 300 choirs from 59 countries will take part in 500 competition concerts and 50 friendship performances.

The World Choir Games aim to build bridges between nations and communities through music and song.

Apart from contributing to understanding and peace among nations, the festival plays an invaluable role in celebrating arts and culture in our city, in our country, and across the continent.

Tshwane mayoral spokesperson Samkelo Mgobozi said this was the first time for the World Choir Games to be in Africa.

Tshwane was, therefore, determined to make this an all-embracing African event.

“Tshwane is the country’s diplomatic hub, home to 134 embassies and high commissions – the second largest behind Washington DC,” said Mgobozi.

“The event will boost the profile of Tshwane globally, regionally and locally as a destination of choice, specifically as a city capable of hosting mega-events”
