Former TUT student’s breakthrough role on popular soapie

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) former student Thabang Molaba has made a major breakthrough with a role on popular TV soapie, The Queen.

He stars alongside the likes of veteran actors Connie Ferguson (producer of the hit TV soapie), author Mara Louw, Thembsie Matu, Themba Ndaba and Rami Chuene.

Molaba, a 23-year-year-old logistics and supply chain management graduate has been modelling for a number of fashion houses before he landed a role in the soapie.

His acting skill has been described as convincing that viewers may think he was actually just sharing his life on screen.

He delivered a brilliant performance on Tom’s monologue, The Glass Menagerie, which is a five-character memory play by Tennessee Williams.

Fewer actors have the ability to master that art – convincing viewers that they and the character can be one person.

The producers of the show introduced Molaba who plays the character of a rich and spoilt young man, Gift Mabuza, who is the on-screen son of Gracious (played by Chuene).

He started shooting in July and admitted he felt the pressure to prove himself.

His pursuit of a career in the entertainment world made him make a move to the city of gold, Johannesburg, where he landed The Queen role and other modelling opportunities.

“I think Johannesburg has more opportunities for me which I want to pursue. I want to follow my passions and grow my talent,” Molaba said.

The upcoming actor has worked with giant fashion retailers Ackermans, Edgars, Shades of Beauty and Samson Clothing on their campaigns.

Molaba has also worked with Pretoria designers whose products he pushes on social media platforms.

“The idea, we make you want to wear what I am wearing, it is a promotion on a different level… more personal as you have to post what you wearing, eating or drinking (at times) so people can also aspire to that,” he said.

He said his passion did not end with being a model, actor or social media influencer.

“I am a stylist and choreographer as well,” he said.

Molaba is signed with ICE Models and Legends Performers who help him find work with reputable industry players and attends one-on-one classes with veteran actress Patricia Boyer.

Molaba describes himself as a hard-working, ambitiously-driven artist.

“I am a young man who is trying to make something and build a name for himself. I live every day with optimism!”

Molaba also featured on Comedy Central’s I Live With A Model, a reality TV show about living with a model.
