VIDEO: Rekord introduces short documentary films – Vernon Barnard

“I always loved singing, but I never thought that it would actually become my career.”

Rekord is to offer a new feature to its online platform, Rekord Doccies, to tell stories in a short documentary film format.

The pilot Rekord Doccies episode will tell the story of a local young blind singer, Vernon Barnard.

When Barnard walked onto the stage in 2016 for The Voice SA singing competition, little did he know that he would win the hearts of many South Africans.

During his audition, he performed ‘The story of my life’ by One Direction and caught the attention of the show’s judges.

One judge, local singer Bobby van Jaarsveld, was in tears when he applauded Barnard.

Barnard’s audition on The Voice SA even caught the attention of Hollywood superstar Ashton Kutcher, who shared the video on Facebook.

Barnard has moved to Pretoria in the two years after making the Top 3 on The Voice SA.

Recently, he launched his new CD ‘Deur jou oë’ at the popular Weiveld.

Sharing his story with Rekord Doccies, Barnard said when the Voice SA was introduced, he told his father that it was the perfect platform for his singing.

“The judges can only hear the person perform until they turn their chairs and I needed to be heard before people can see that I am blind,” Barnard said.

“I always loved singing, but I never thought that it would actually become my career.”
