LISTEN: Moot architect celebrates city history through colouring book

"Most big cities have a very fascinating history and that it what I want to emphasise through this book."

An architect from the Moot has produced a colouring book to celebrate the historic side of Pretoria.

Architect Sue Clark said the colouring book consisted of all the historic monuments and places in Pretoria with facts about each of them.

“I love history and find the history in Pretoria very fascinating. Most big cities have a fascinating history and that is what I wanted to emphasise through this book,” Clark said.

“While colouring in the pictures, I also wish to enrich people with their heritage and take them back to their roots.”

Clark said she has always admired the history of Pretoria central.

“As a kid, we always visited Pretoria central, but nowadays youngsters mostly choose to visit the malls,” she said.

“I hope this book motivates them to go out and see the city’s beauty.”

Clark said she started doodling buildings and monuments for fun.

“That was when I decided to put it into a book. First, I gathered all the pictures of the historic places in the city. Some pictures I took and some I gathered from newspaper clippings and the internet,” she said.

“After that, I drew a rough draft of the pictures, then redrew each picture neatly with an artistic twist for colouring purposes.”

The work was then scanned and printed.

Clark, who has been an architect for 25 years. She and her husband decided to scale their business down when they turned 50 last year.

“We decided to make more time for ourselves and do everything that we have ever wanted to do,” she said.

“I have done some artwork in the past and I did this colouring book as one of my first projects since we scaled down.”

The book was released at the end of March.

“This whole experience has opened up a completely new world to me,” she said.

She has lived in the Moot since they moved back to Pretoria.
