COMPETITION: Afrikaans all-girl rock band Saarkie to launch new album

Local girl rock band Saarkie is back with a spanking new album.

Rekord spoke to the ladies from this phenomenal group to hear what their plans were, what they would like to achieve and how they were planning on getting there.

Adele, Lila and Erika are three talented friends from Pretoria with a mutual love of rock music.

The inspiration behind their new album “Queen van die Toorbos” came from an urge to conquer and take control of any challenge or experience.

“From our point of view a queen of a magic forest (toorbos) is someone who stumbles upon an unknown situation, conquers it and takes control over it like a queen,” the three explained.

“This inspired us to fearlessly pour a little bit of ourselves into the album and speak our minds through our music.”

They described this album as being exceptionally special due to the fact that new ballads and sounds had been incorporated.

“We have combined a mixture of unique sounds such as the piano and cello,” said the members.

“It also has both English and Afrikaans tracks, as well as original and cover songs. There is really something for everyone’s ears.”

Saarkie plans to go on tour to promote their new album in towns like Aliwal North, the Drakensberg region and Nelspruit among many more.

“October and November are jam-packed. We’re really looking forward to our tour in Cape Town starting 15 December,” they said.

“We’ll be visiting Barrels and Blues in Swellendam and the Nameless Pub in Somerset West. We’ll also be performing in Struis Bay, Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Mossel Bay and Camps Bay.”

Though they enjoyed touring all around South Africa, they remained proudly Pretorian girls.

“Pretoria is vibrant, colourful and filled with loving people who are adventurous and willing to explore new things,” they said.

“We have a big audience in Pretoria who can sing along. And we love the Jacarandas. Purple is definitely our favourite colour.”

Saarkie had been in the South African music industry for eight years, a tough unforgettable journey.

“People don’t really see what goes on behind the scenes. Driving, setting up, performing, smiling, packing up, and yes, we pack up our own speakers,” they said.

“But it’s worth it – every second. Mondays are our off days when we can sleep late if we don’t teach. When our week kicks off, we’re back to band practice, music lessons, interviews, song writing, singing lessons, recording and much more.”

They would love to collaborate with Mango Groove “because they’ve got groove”, Joshua na die Reën and definitely the boys of Spoegwolf.

On their future prospects, Saarkie had one goal in mind.

“We would definitely like to break into the international music industry,” they said.

“We have toured every corner of South Africa and neighbouring countries like Mozambique and Namibia, but we would certainly like to delve into that side of things.”

Doors open at 18:30 and the show starts at 20:30.
