Centurion drama king delivers captivating show

This entrancing drama captures the essence of manhood, masculinity, sexuality and acceptance.

Centurion drama king and Naledi award winner, Jannes Erasmus’s, new Afrikaans drama will feature at the Pretoria State Theatre until 23 September.

Vir.Ander is based on true events dealing with masculinity and what it means to be a young Afrikaans man.

It showcases the pressures that come with family obligations when someone is not allowed to be who they are or express themselves in a way that they want to, in a complex place like the new South Africa.

It shines a light on homosexuality, what it means, the controversy of how it is perceived and how families take it on.

It also takes a look at a group of young men who are sent to a conversion camp in order to become “men”.

The drama captures the essence of manhood, masculinity, sexuality and acceptance.

At the end, Erasmus’s gripping play emphasises that the only thing that can pull people through is standing together, unity and the perception of freedom.
