Vocal ability opens doors for local artist

Wintervedlt-born artist Strike Moshe believes discovering his vocal ability early on has helped him realise his goals.

Talented gospel music artist Strike Moshe believes his vocal ability has helped him succeed in the industry.

Winterveldt-born Moshe, otherwise known as Moses Tholo, said he had to work hard to make it in the industry.

Since he started his professional career, Moshe’s talent and determination to work hard gave him an advantage over other musicians.

Moshe, who just released his sixth album, Umoya Wami, said while he worked very hard to push his music, his vocal ability was also powerful enough to land a recording deal.

“My friend and I were in a studio just to get a feel for things. One guy was playing around with a piano and I just sang the lyrics and they [producers] were impressed. They signed me right on the spot and did my two albums,” he said.

“While I was still there I got a call that Thami Mdluli was looking for artists. Once again I landed another contract without struggling,” he said.

Moshe said his latest release was more about him.

As someone who has worked with many musicians, Moshe’s style has various influences; it is refreshing and matured.

“This album showcases my passion as a musician. In this one it is more about what I feel than what the company wants me to sound like. My style is a fusion of traditional contemporary gospel and ZCC style.”

Before pursuing his solo career, Moshe worked with Solly Moholo, Winnie Mashaba and Sinky Mathe.

In Umoya Wami, Moshe went all out to display his songwriting skills by composing one of the most heartwarming songs.

Moshe also honoured the late Vuyo Mokoena, who died in 2008, in the album.

“In my book, Mokoena was a gospel king. I decided to honour him for his contribution to the music industry.”

“As a musician I looked up to him. In the song I am trying to put myself in his shoes when he was in pain in hospital. I tried to imagine what he was saying to himself.”

Moshe has released songs such as Kuyobamnandi, Ke ne ke le Moheitene, Morena Nkarabe and Rwala Merwalo. He is also a member of a promising male gospel group, Exodus.
