The history of the Mo

Movember is around the corner. Read here to see where it all started.

It is almost time for most men (and a few women) to participate in the annual, international Movember challenge to raise awareness and money towards a global epidemic known as prostate cancer.

Originally from Australia, the Movember Foundation was created by Travis Garone and Luke Slattery and a few of their 30 closest friends in 2003, to donate money towards the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA).

By 2006, the Movember Foundation received official Australian charity status.

In 2007 Movember officially launches in the US in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, in Canada with Prostate Cancer Canada, in the UK with The Prostate Cancer Charity and in Spain with FEFOC (Fundación Privada Jordi Estapé.)

The Movember Foundation officially launches campaigns in South Africa by 2010 in partnership with Cansa and in Finland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

By 2011 the Movember Foundation reached new heights by being ranked in the top 100 best NGOs (non-profit organisations) in the world by the Global Journal based on three key main criteria: impact, innovation and sustainability.

Countries like New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa and Sweden, along with 16 other countries, participate in the Movember challenge this year, with an impressive R5.7 billion being raised towards the cause since 2003.

The Movember challenge continues to inspire millions of people with 4 746 905 supporters globally and 832 men’s health projects funded since 2003.

Get ready for Movember in 2015, it is going to be something to remember.
