Dis ek, Anna a hit

The controversial film, Dis ek, Anna, kicked dirt in the eyes of other international movies during its opening at the weekend and earned more than R773 000.

Dis ek, Anna, labelled the most controversial film to hit the silver screen this year, has kicked cinematic-dirt in the eyes of international films.

This Afrikaans film, based on the best-selling fictionalised autobiographical novels Ek, Anna and Die Staat teen Anna Bruwer by Anchien Troskie, was released in 39 cinemas and earned a gross box office of more than R773 000.

“The film is currently positioned at number 3 on the local Box Office top 10 performing films,” said Times Media Films general manager Driki van Zyl.

According to a news statement, the film opened stronger than Die Wonderwerker (R733 391,00), the Charlize Theron vehicle, Monster (R655 184,00), Tsotsi (R526 275) and Kite Runner (R274 858,00) in their respective opening weekends

Actor Hykie Berg, who plays a minor role in this film, said: “Once again this film is one of those road signs, and if it is ignored, we have to accept the responsibility for the brokenness of human beings.”

Van Zyl described the box office figures for opening weekend as thrilling.

“The film performed exceptionally well, despite having to compete with the Rugby World Cup, and Currie Cup Final on Saturday, usually the strongest day for cinema attendances,” he said.

“Times Media Films is proud to be distributing this remarkable film and the strong showing at the box office this weekend is proof that audiences want to see quality and thought provoking films from local filmmakers.”

Dis ek, Anna stars Charlené Brouwer, Marius Weyers, Nicola Hanekom, and Mornè Visser with newcomer Izel Bezuidenhout, Eduan van Jaarsveldt, Drikus Volschenk, Ilse Klink, Elton Andrew, Elize Cawood and Dawid Minnaar.

The film garnered 3 top awards at the KykNET- Silwerskermfees and is now headed to Europe for a series of screenings at international film festivals.
