Gunter proves mantra that failures teach, wrong

A multitude of lightly brushed oil paintings on canvas told a story which according to Gunter’s former lecturer and mentor, Mr Gordon Froud spoke a story of solitude.

For many, art is simply a form of expression, but to Carlien Gunter it is her place of solitude for a creative mind to soar.

From a young age, Gunter was spellbound by art and is now, as a teacher and creator at Abbots College in Centurion, hoping to pass on the love for art.

For her final year project as student at the University of Pretoria, Gunter achieved third place in the PPC Cement Young Concrete Sculptor Awards.

She recently put on her first exhibition themed A fraction of a moment showcasing her evolution through the years.

“Paintings should evoke emotion in every person,” she said.

Her former lecturer and mentor, Gordon Froud said the intricate details and deep meanings of the paintings exhibited symbolised Gunter’s sincere story of her unique peace.

“I owe a lot to my friends, my mother, daughter, family, my students and Abbots College staff for their continued support throughout the long nights and early mornings of getting things ready in time for the exhibition,” said Gunter.

“I think sometimes when you are a teacher you forget the difficulty of presenting your own work because as a teacher you are always critiquing students or other people’s work. When you are the one exhibiting, you leave yourself exposed.”

Gunter said she drew inspiration from her teen daughter Kayla.

“My daughter plays an important role in my life and I hope to be an inspiration to her one day,” she said.

“I have always had a yearning for freedom and I now believe I have found it in the work I create.”
