Fabulous fundraiser at Fumo

Fumo Restaurant hosts a spectacular fundraiser in aid of Pink Drive.

Charity has never been this fun.

Fumo Restaurant and the Tshwane metro hosted a glamorous evening in aid of Pink Drive on Friday evening.

Pink Drive is a breast cancer awareness organisation that provides free screening to men and woman across South Africa. It uses mobile mammography trucks to conduct the screenings.

Guests at Fumo were treated to a sumptuous five-course meal, with excellent wine and whisky, sponsored by Glenfiddich, to accompany each dish.

Tony Signorelli, co-owner of Fumo, said the idea of a charity gala evening came to him before he had even decided which charity organisation should benefit.

“I knew I wanted to do this evening and have classic music. I got in touch with Chris (Coetzer, one of the performers on the night) and he suggested Pink Drive,” said Signorelli.

“All of the money made tonight will go directly towards Pink Drive and the wonderful work they do.”

Between meals, guests were treated to a mix of classical (Besame Mucho) and traditional (Pata Pata) music, delightfully performed by crooners Chris Coetzer, Stephan Heroldt and Greunen.

Before dessert was served, an auction to raise money for Pink Drive was held. An exquisite painting, a peaceful Hout Bay harbour scene, by local artist Anton Gericke was auctioned off for R40 000.

Gericke said: “Every year do as much as I can for charity. Pink Drive is such a wonderful charity and I support them in any way possible.”

After the auction, a spirit of giving pulsed through the room.

Lemo Motuba and Jeremiah Matlala of the Matlala Corporate and Social Investment corporation decided not to take part in the auction but to donate R40 000 to Pink Drive. The two vowed to become involved in similar drives in Mamelodi.

Thorburn Security also donated R10 000.

Motuba said: “I am from Mamelodi, and I believe that it is crucial to change the townships for the better. If you can change the life of a young girl through a drive like this, you can change the world.”

Pink Drive corporate relationship manager Antoinette Joubert was excited over the evening’s contributions that came to a total of R100 000.

Joubert said she hoped the money could be used to buy another mobile mammography truck.
