Tannie Biemie turns 100

Groenkloof woman celebrates 100th birthday.

A Groenkloof woman, Biemie Vermooten, says she’s counting her blessings for reaching the ripe age of 100.

Tannie Biemie, turns 100 on Wednesday, 26 August. “It is through the grace of God,” she said.

She is still healthy, strong and not in a wheelchair. Tannie Biemie walks without the assistance of a stick and is active, with a very good memory. She remembers everyone as they come through to greet her and talks a lot for her age.

Dozens of friends, neighbours and family members came out to Three Oaks, Centurion to celebrate her big milestone. She said the secret was to eat well and live well.

“I never go a day without drinking water. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. I never drank alcohol in my life. I grew up playing tennis, swimming, and also excercising,” she said.

“The good Lord is the reason I am here. I always have faith, and I am grateful for everything that God has done for me,” she said.

Biemie was born on a farm in Vlakfontein near Tafelkop in the North West. She was the second last born of her parents’ six children – all girls.

She has lived in Zwaartruggens, Potchefstroom, Johannesburg, Maraisburg, Polokwane and Musina before she settled in Pretoria.

Biemie has been living at her Groenkloof house in Pretoria for the past 47 years. Her niece, Lulu Pieterse, said as a family they were grateful to God for blessing Tannie Biemie with such a long life.

“Two things she does not like to do is cooking and driving a car,” Lulu said jokingly.

Biemie added her wish was that God could give her many more years for as long as she was still healthy and going strong.
