Mall a colosseum of curiosities

The Grove mall has been filled with some of the most incredible Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! artifacts.

The Grove mall has been transformed into a weird and wonderful world of oddities.

The Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Expo has come to South Africa for the very first time, making its first stop at The Grove mall.

The entire mall is lined with various exhibits, spanning the 95 years since Robert L. Ripley set out across the world in search of the strange and curious.

“This is the first time that we’ve allowed our expo to be displayed this way,” said Jim Pattison, president of Ripley’s Entertainment.

“Robert Ripley was known nicknamed ‘The Modern Marco Polo’, and this expo features some of the most incredible things he collected on his journey,” said Pattison.

He added: “Robert Ripley also made history when he made the first radio broadcast from Africa to the United States during his visit to South Africa. He travelled by boat from Cairo and arrived in Durban.”

Across the mall, 19 interactive expo stands house more than 140 artefacts. From a hall of mirrors and a shrunken head, to a mummified falcon and a sculpture in the eye of a needle, the expo is sure to take your breath away.

This is truly a venerable collection of some the most incredible human endeavours and Mother Nature’s creations, all housed in one place.

The expo runs from 31 July to 23 August 2015.

Mall marketing manager Pierre Botha said: “Shoppers are encouraged to take as many photos as possible at all of the various stands. After all, this is what it is all about.”
