Up-and-coming artists and those looking to make it big in the music industry were treated to a spectacular ‘how to’ by some of the industry’s heavyweights on Wednesday.

Well-known DJs Uhuru and Oskido hosted the Tshwane music conference where they shared some experience and advice with youngsters looking to make it big in the industry.

Some stars also shared their stories with the crowd on the challenges and hassles they faced during their journey to success.

SA music rights organisation spokesperson Eugene Golouw started the presentation with the main aim to inform upcoming artists about the importance of copyright.

During a question and answer session, Golouw dealt with the rights of ownership to an artist’s music. “It is very important to credit the artist when you are sampling his or her work. It may be in a form of remix or cover but it is very important to get a licence that allows you to remake someone else’s work,” he said.

Sibusiso Leope, commonly known as Dj Sbu, gave the audience a bit of advice on how to build their brand. “The music industry has so many opportunities for young people, you just need to pick yourself up and believe in yourself. It is very important to market yourself; it’s like being a product. For a product to sell, you have to market it very well,” he said.

Themba Sekowe aka Maporiza of Uhuru, who was the master of ceremonies, thanked his mentor Oskido for believing in him. “It takes time to come up with a hit and it also takes time to break through in the music industry, you have to be patient, very patient,” Maporisa said.

Oscar Bonginkosi Mdlongwa, known as Oskido, also shared some of his success stories and the evening included performances by Bob Zama Zama and Uhuru.
