The South African Air Force (SAAF) Museum held its annual air show at the Swartkop airfield alongside Old Johannesburg Road in Valhalla on Saturday.

Many spectators arrived at the crack of dawn to make the 09:00 opening.

There were exhibits from various South African National Defence Force sectors, including the armour, infantry, engineering and artillery formations, the military health service and the navy.

The theme of the air show was ‘95 years of aviation excellence – celebrating 21 years of democracy’.

Major-General Wiseman Mbambo said: “The day was aimed at promoting aviation awareness, which forms part of the mandate given to the SAAF Museum.”

Military and civilian warbirds from various eras of military aviation history displayed both static and flying exhibitions.

Mbambo continued: “The aim of the air show is also to raise funds for the Air Force Museum and to create awareness about the important role the museum plays in preserving the heritage of the SAAF.”

The SAAF also held a career expo for youngsters, with stalls from SAAF recruitment, Siyandiza, Mango Airlines and other flying training institutions.
