The Crown of Russian Ballet wows the crowed

Audiences at the SA State theatre were once again amazed by the great performances of the Crown of Russian Ballet.

South African audiences are once again treated to great performances with the Crown of the Russian Ballet’s 175th Tchaikovsky anniversary on South African stages from 25 April. The tour ends on 9 May.

Featuring the esteemed Crown of the Russian Ballet company, Pretoria fans have been in for a treat from 1 to 3 May at the SA State Theatre.

The ballet company returned to Gauteng with four performances at the State Theatre (Drama) from 1 to 3 May, before closing their tour at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from 6 to 9 May.

The carefully selected line-up is certain to thrill classical ballet enthusiasts of all ages. The repertoire had been prepared specially for South African audiences by artistic director Anatoly Emelianov.

This weekend’s programme opened with the world premiere of Emelianov’s Manfred, a one-act ballet choreographed to one of Tchaikovsky’s undoubted masterpieces, the symphony Manfred. The narrative for this work deals with deep remorse and moral anguish and hails from Lord Byron’s poem of the same name.

Manfred is a romantic hero of epic and Faustian proportions. In his idealistic dilemma, he is doomed to destroy the very ones he loves. Imbued with supernatural elements, the metaphysical torment of Manfred is given the choreographic distinction audiences internationally have come to associate with the work of Anatoly Emelianov.

Crown of the Russian Ballet is presented by impresario Edouard Miasnikov who delights in sharing Russian culture with South African audiences in the interests of widening cultural exchange and dialogue.
