ANCYL’s application to protest against Steve declined

The ANCYL is not allowed to protest against Steve Hofmeyr at the Afrikaans is Groot- concert in Moreleta Park.

Tshwane metro rejected the African National Congress Youth League’s (ANCYL) application for a “peaceful protest action” at the Afrikaans is Groot (AIG) concert series held at the Dutch Reformed Church in Moreleta Park.

Spokesman for the AIG, Barnard Beukman, said the AIG was formally notified on Wednesday that the application was declined.

“We would like to confirm to concert attendees, who might have security concerns, that this issue has now been resolved,” he said.

“We welcome the situation where concertgoers can now attend the concert in a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy the music.”

Rekord last week reported the ANCYL in Tshwane’s ward 91 was planning a protest during the concert between 14 and 22 November.

The idea of a protest was prompted by perceived racist remarks on social media by Afrikaans singer and activist Steve Hofmeyr.

Comedian Conrad Koch, better known as Chester Missing, reacted by calling on consumers to boycott institutions sponsoring Hofmeyr — specifically the AIG concert where Hofmeyr would be performing.

The ANCYL in ward 91 could not be reached for comment.
