The Jacaranda City will be a haven of colour soon

Rainbows are heading for the Jacaranda City as Pretoria has been chosen as one of the venues to host The Color Run which celebrates health, happiness and individuality.

Locals can prepare themselves for the happiest five kilometres on the planet as the original of all powder races, The Color Run, heads to Pretoria to turn the city’s streets into a canvas of colour.

Participants are guaranteed the time of their lives on 22 November when, during the 5km event those with a taste for life can run, walk, cartwheel or be pushed in a trolley and get blasted with clouds of brightly coloured powder in separate colour zones.

The Color Run, which is hosted in partnership with Rekord, ends with a colour-throwing and music festival where Color Runners can make the world a more vibrant place.

Hosted in more than 50 countries, the run celebrates happiness, health and individuality and is the world’s largest single-event series and enjoys the participation of over four million people globally.

Pretoria is one of 15 selected venues in The Colour Run 2014 national series and follows Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Johannesburg where sold out events had participants raving.

Color Runners will receive race packs which include a signature white T-shirt, headband and temporary tattoos as well as a packet of powder at the finish line to kick off signature Color Blasts in the festival zone.

The fun kicks off at 09:00 at the Voortrekker Monument in Eufees Road and the start is staged in three-minute waves to give Color Runners room to move along the route. It takes one to two hours to complete before runners head for the festival zone where local deejays and artists will make music, best-dressed competitions will be held and food and drinks will be available.

The Color Run is a non-timed event and participants are mostly first time runners. The only rule is to have the most colourful fun of your life and not to worry about looking like a punk rocker on Monday morning. The powder is made of organic corn starch which easily washes out of hair and a bit of washing powder will wash it out of clothes.

There is a lot to The Color Run, not just great memories and technicolour photos. Despite being a global initiative, it sources local suppliers for each event and is also a socially conscious platform giving proceeds back to the local community.
