Deception lies in the tongue

This little fruity deceiver has a trick up its sleeve.

A tiny red berry dubbed the ‘miracle fruit’ has the power to transform your tastebuds.

This berry has the potential to turn everything that tastes sour to tasting sweet.

The miracle berry, or scientifically knows as synsepalum dulcificum, is grown naturally in Ghana, West Africa.

Synsepalum dulcificum is a plant with a berry that, when eaten, causes sour foods (such as lemons and limes) subsequently consumed to taste sweet.

This effect is due to miraculin, which is used commercially as a sugar substitute. Common names for this species and its berry include miracle fruit, miracle berry, miraculous berry and sweet berry.

The berries are often used as a dietary supplement and a food enhancer.

The fruit considerably enhances the flavours of some selective fruits and vegetables.
