Sacha blow for Boks

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu did not travel with the Boks to Argentina due to a knee injury but will be available for the November tour of the UK.

Rassie Erasmus has revealed that Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has suffered a knee injury that will keep the young playmaker out of the Rugby Championship finale against Argentina.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu did not travel with the 28-player Springbok squad to Argentina for the penultimate round of the tournament, after playing in all four Rugby Championship games against the Wallabies and All Blacks.

It was initially thought that the 22-year-old was being rested for the final match of the tournament against Argentina in Nelspruit.

However, after naming his team to tackle Los Pumas in Santiago del Estero, Erasmus revealed yesterday that Feinberg-Mngomezulu suffered an injury that will need surgery, but he will be available for the November tour of the UK.

“Sacha will only be ready for the end-of-year tour with a knee injury,” Erasmus said. “He injured his knee before the first Test against the All Blacks.

“He played through it. I asked him during the next week why he was limping and he said he injured his knee last week.

“I actually really wanted to pull him out of the team because he was limping. That what we need the players to understand, you must be honest about injuries. Sacha is lucky we won both of those Test matches.

“He is having the operation now. I’m not exactly sure what is wrong with his knee, but he will be ready in around four to six weeks.”

The good news for the Springboks is that Damian Willemse is ready to go, after recovering from the finger injury that needed surgery and ruled him out of the Test season to date.

Willemse, the Springboks’ go-to fullback at the world cup last year, is likely to make his return for the Stormers in their season-opening tour, which gets underway on September 28.
