Los Pumas suffer backline blow for Bok battle
Argentina’s Matías Orlando being ruled out of Saturday’s clash against the Boks has created a significant gap in the squad’s midfield.
Argentina have suffered a setback ahead of their Rugby Championship clash against the Springboks, with experienced centre Matías Orlando ruled out of Saturday’s match in Santiago.
The 32-year-old, who has yet to feature in this year’s Rugby Championship, will miss the crucial clash at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.
Orlando’s absence creates a significant gap in Argentina’s midfield. A veteran with 59 international caps, Orlando was involved in Argentina’s July Test matches against France in Mendoza and Buenos Aires, as well as the away fixture against Uruguay.
However, he was not part of the squad in Argentina’s record-breaking 67-27 win over Australia, and his injury now sidelines him for the opening match against the Springboks.
Head coach Felipe Contepomi has called up uncapped wing Santiago Pernas as Orlando’s replacement, though the 21-year-old will bolster the wing rather than the centre options.
Orlando’s position in the midfield will be filled by a combination of Matías Moroni, Santiago Chocobares, Lucio Cinti, and the uncapped Justo Piccardo, giving Contepomi plenty of cover.
Despite Orlando’s absence, Los Pumas will rely on a strong backline, with Pernas joining a talented group of wingers that includes Mateo Carreras, Bautista Delguy, Rodrigo Isgró, and Ignacio Mendy.
Pernas has enjoyed a stellar season in the 2024 Super Rugby Americas, where he caught the attention of selectors with his exceptional performances.
His strong form culminated in a hat-trick for the Argentina XV in a 64-29 victory over Brazil on September 8.
