Keeping your car dependable for everyday driving is crucial, especially for busy mums.
Short trips can lull you into a false sense of security, but neglecting maintenance can lead to breakdowns at the worst possible moments and places.
The Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) urges mums to prioritise car safety with these key checks:
• Car seats: Ensure car seats are within their recommended lifespan and have not degraded due to age or sun exposure. Refer to manufacturer guidelines for safe use periods.
• Seatbelts: Check for any tears, fraying or malfunctioning buckles. Replace damaged belts immediately.
• Wipers: Maintain clear visibility by replacing worn wiper blades that streak or smear the windshield.
• Coolant: Top up coolant levels year-round to prevent overheating and engine damage.
• Brakes: Ensure proper braking performance with a professional inspection.
• Battery: Avoid being stranded – have your car’s battery checked to ensure it holds a charge and starts the car reliably.
• Oil: Regular oil changes provide optimal lubrication and engine protection.
• Tyres: Check tyre tread depth and inflation pressure. Proper tread depth ensures safe driving in wet conditions.
• Wheel alignment: Correct wheel alignment promotes even tyre wear, improves fuel efficiency and extends tyre lifespan.
Additional tips for safe and healthy travels:
• Declutter the car: Remove loose objects that could become projectiles in an accident or distract the driver.
• Maintain a clean interior: Regular vacuuming reduces dust, pollen and allergens, creating a healthier environment for children.
• Carry an emergency kit: Be prepared for unexpected situations with a tyre repair kit and a well-stocked first-aid kit.
• Verify child lock functionality: Ensure child locks on rear doors are functioning correctly.
