What do South Africans think about new energy cars?

A recent report by Autotrader confirms that South Africans are interested in electric vehicles, though challenges remain. Read more about it here.

The AutoTrader 2024 New Energy Vehicle Report illuminates South African consumer attitudes toward electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids.

While EVs remain a niche segment, interest is steadily rising, driven by lower running costs, superior refinement and environmental benefits.

Challenges and concerns

Despite growing interest, charging infrastructure remains a significant barrier for many South Africans considering an EV. High purchase prices are another concern, with 46% of survey respondents citing this as a major disadvantage.

Growing sales and future intentions

Despite challenges, the market for EVs and hybrids is expanding rapidly. Hybrid car sales increased by 88% in 2024, while EV sales grew by 78%. This trend is expected to continue as more manufacturers introduce affordable electric vehicle models.

Consumer priorities

Fuel efficiency is a top priority for prospective new energy vehicle owners, with 60% of respondents citing it as the main advantage. Lower carbon emissions and reduced air pollution are also key factors.

Charging expectations

Consumers are willing to purchase an electric vehicle or hybrid if it can charge in less than four hours. When plugged into a fast charger, the expected charging time is less than an hour.

The electric vehicle market in South Africa is on the rise, driven by growing consumer interest and the introduction of new models. While challenges remain, the future looks promising for the adoption of EVs and hybrids in the country.
