Karting changes Cape Town youngster’s life

Reece Ward discovered his love of karting at a young age and it has changed his life significantly. Read more about it here.

Reece Ward, a young boy from Cape Town, discovered a passion for karting that has transformed his life in ways he never imagined.

Reece’s obsession with cars began at a tender age, with die-cast racing cars becoming his constant companions. This early fascination eventually led to his first karting experience at the age of two, a turning point that would shape his future.

Reece, now 14, was diagnosed with ADHD in Grade One. The condition, characterised by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, presented significant challenges in his academic life. Dysgraphia, a neurological condition affecting written language, further complicated his schooling. These difficulties led to low self-esteem and a sense of isolation.

To address Reece’s struggles, his parents enrolled him in Oakley House School. This specialised school offers neurodiverse students tailored learning strategies to help them reach their full potential. The change of environment proved to be transformative for Reece. He became more confident, outgoing and engaged in his studies.

Karting played a pivotal role in Reece’s development. The sport provided an outlet for his energy and helped him build self-confidence. His participation in the Western Province Motor Club’s Clubmans category has not only improved his focus and concentration, but has also fostered a sense of camaraderie and belonging.

Adrian Scholtz, the CEO of Motorsport South Africa, is enthusiastic about the positive impact karting has had on Reece and other young people. He believes that the sport can enhance focus, confidence and overall well-being. For many children like Reece, karting has been a life-changing experience.

Reece’s love for karting extends beyond the thrill of competition. He fondly recalls his first indoor track experience and his admiration for Formula One icons like Michael Schumacher. Despite the challenges he faced transitioning to outdoor tracks, Reece persevered through practice and dedication.

Oakley House School has played a crucial role in Reece’s progress. The school’s specialised approach, which focuses on individualised learning strategies and support, has enabled him to overcome challenges and achieve academic success. Reece’s principal, James Buchanan, has witnessed a significant transformation in the young man, from a reluctant learner to a confident and engaged student.

Buchanan highlights the importance of personal goals and effort in fostering positive outcomes. He believes that karting’s demand for focus and rapid thinking aligns well with the needs of students with ADHD. The sport’s ability to turn challenges into strengths can have a profound impact on their overall development.

For Reece, the adrenaline rush of karting is an exhilarating experience. He has also achieved significant success, including winning the Clubmans Driver of the Day award. His journey has been made possible by the unwavering support of his parents and friends.

Reece encourages other young people to explore the world of karting. He advises starting with indoor karting to get a feel for the sport before venturing onto outdoor tracks. The karting community is welcoming and supportive, offering guidance and encouragement to new participants.

As Reece continues to excel in karting, his story serves as an inspiration to others. His journey demonstrates the transformative power of passion, perseverance and the right support.
