The Toyota Motor Corporation and the BMW Group have announced a strengthened partnership to accelerate the development of hydrogen technology.
Building on their decade-long partnership, Toyota and BMW will develop a third-generation fuel cell system. This system will be installed in both Toyota and BMW models, expanding the range of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) available to customers. BMW plans to launch its first mass-produced FCEV in 2028. Beyond technology development, Toyota and BMW will also work together to establish sustainable hydrogen supply networks. By creating demand and collaborating with hydrogen-producing companies, distribution facilities, and refuelling stations, they aim to ensure a stable hydrogen supply and reduce costs.
Koji Sato, the president of Toyota, emphasised the shared passion for cars and belief in “technology openness” between the two companies. He stated: “Based on these shared values, we will deepen our collaboration in efforts such as the joint development of next-generation fuel cell systems and the expansion of infrastructure, aiming for the realisation of a hydrogen society.”
Oliver Zipse, the chairman of the management board at BMW AG, highlighted the significance of this partnership, saying: “This is a milestone in automotive history. The first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle to be offered by a global premium manufacturer.”
Toyota has positioned hydrogen as a key energy source in its path to carbon neutrality. By collaborating with various partners, the company is advancing initiatives in hydrogen production, transportation, storage and usage. Toyota aims to address the needs of customers in each region by offering a multi-pathway approach that includes FCEV, battery electric, hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle options.
