Check that bulge: China heatwave causes car wraps to swell

Car owners in China have been advised to park their vehicles in the shade to avoid vehicle wraps swelling from the extreme heat.

A recent heatwave in China led to peculiar posts on social media, with videos surfacing on X and Instagram showing cars with strange, bubble-like protrusions on their surfaces. This odd occurrence is linked to the country’s extreme temperatures, which have had unexpected effects on vehicle wraps.

China is enduring an unprecedented heatwave that has posed significant challenges for its residents and extended its impact to vehicles.

Videos of cars with large, spherical protrusions have gone viral, prompting curiosity and concern. Contrary to initial speculation, these deformations are not due to mechanical failures or manufacturing flaws. Instead, the extreme heat in China is to blame. The country has experienced temperatures surpassing 40°C in many regions throughout July and early August. This intense heat has caused the vinyl films used to wrap cars to expand, resulting in the swollen appearance observed in the viral footage.

Car wraps are typically thin vinyl films applied to protect the vehicle’s paint, alter its colour, or serve as advertising mediums. These films are engineered to endure various weather conditions, yet the severe heatwave has tested their resilience. Experts explain that prolonged exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight can compromise the integrity and appearance of car wraps. The heat weakens the adhesive, leading to blistering, stretching, and in extreme cases, swelling.

While car wraps are generally equipped with layers designed to shield against radiation, the record-breaking temperatures in China have overwhelmed some of these protections. The swelling occurs when the adhesive releases gases that expand, forming bubbles that give the cars an inflated look. To mitigate such damage, car owners are advised to park in shaded areas or use sunshades to shield their vehicles from the sun’s intense rays.
