Uber clarifies vehicle age policy for SA drivers

Uber has clarified its vehicle age policy for its South African drivers following recent misunderstandings. Read more about it here.

There have been reports suggesting that all Uber drivers in South Africa must drive cars less than three years old. This is incorrect.

While new drivers signing up to the platform must have a vehicle that is three years old or newer, existing drivers can continue to use their cars for up to eight years.

This policy, introduced in 2022, aims to enhance safety and improve the rider experience. Newer vehicles typically have advanced safety features and are more likely to be in good condition.

“We want to reassure our drivers that there’s no requirement to replace their vehicles every three years,” says Cassie Jaganyi, the head of communications for Uber South Africa. “Our focus is on safety and maintaining a high standard of service for our riders.”
