Love at first sight is a cliché, but in the case of Tanya O’Connor and her Fiat 500, it’s a heart-warming reality. This passionate car enthusiast’s unwavering devotion to the iconic Italian model is a testament to its enduring appeal.

A seasoned automotive professional with a racing background, O’Connor’s journey with cars is impressive. However, nothing compares to her connection with the Fiat 500. It’s a bond so deep she even got a tattoo to commemorate her love of the car.

The story of how she ended up with her beloved blue Fiat 500 is a tale of serendipity and unwavering determination.

The Fiat 500: An icon

Celebrating its 67th birthday this year, the Fiat 500 has captured the hearts of millions worldwide. Designed as an affordable vehicle for the masses, it quickly became a symbol of post-war Italy and has since evolved into a fashion and lifestyle icon.

With over 7.5 million units sold, the Fiat 500’s legacy is secure. Its compact size, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character continue to resonate with drivers of all ages.

O’Connor’s story is a reminder of the emotional connection people can form with their cars. Her passion for the Fiat 500 is a testament to the car’s enduring appeal.

She bought her first white Fiat 500 and drove it for a couple of days until it was time to get it registered in her name. For the two days that it was out of her hands, the dealership, Rola Fiat in Somerset West, gave her a blue 500 Sport twin air cabriolet, so that she wouldn’t be inconvenienced.

“They joke that it was still healing when I went to pick her up,” O’Connor says of the Fiat name plate inked between her shoulder blades. It’s flanked by one of the 500 Sport in blue on her left shoulder with the word ‘Sprezzatura’ beneath it and the Abarth scorpion on her other shoulder.

“Sprezzatura is Italian for ‘to go about effortlessly’, which is what my car allows me to do, while the Abarth scorpion speaks to me being a Scorpio,” she explains.

“This is a car that spreads joy and happiness. She even dries my hair when the roof is off, and in this world we must use and enjoy all the fun we can get.”

For Fiat South Africa brand manager Karac Chitaka, O’Connor is not just a brand superfan, she’s a dream ambassador.
