Audi SA expands EV charging network with rapid chargers

Audi South Africa, in collaboration with Rubicon, has announced it will expand the local electric-vehicle charging network with the addition of new DC rapid chargers.

Marking the local arm of the German marque’s third investment into the public electric-vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, Audi South Africa has announced the introduction of a sextet of “ultra-fast” public EV charging stations to the national EV charging grid. The 150 kW DC units will be located at “key” locations in SA.

Where are the new fast charging stations located?

The 150kW DC charging stations will be sited along the N1, N2 and N3 motorways at:

  • Century City, Cape Town (N1)
  • Tygervalley Shopping Centre, Cape Town (N1)
  • Fleurdal Mall, Bloemfontein (N1)
  • Somerset Mall, Somerset West (N2)
  • Galleria Mall, Amanzimtoti (N2)
  • The Avenues Centre, Hilton (N3)

The six new units, the brand with the four rings says, allow EV owners the opportunity to travel longer distances and, of course, when having to stop to replenish their EV’s battery pack, rapid charging times (the company claims the ‘average e-tron battery can charge from 5% to 80% in 30 minutes or less).

As a reminder, in 2022 and 2023, the German automaker, in partnership with GridCars and Rubicon added more than 120 AC public charging points to the national grid. With the addition of the new fast-charging units, the total investment is now more than R50m.

“This third wave of investment into the public charging network in South Africa highlights once again our commitment to electric mobility,” said Sascha Sauer, the head of Audi South Africa. “We believe EVs represent the future of our brand, both globally as well as locally, and we’re therefore playing our part in making electric mobility a convenient, straightforward reality for more and more South Africans.”

Greg Blandford, the director of energy and e-mobility at Rubicon, added: “Rubicon is proud to have collaborated with Audi South Africa on the installation of six cutting-edge Wallbox Supernova 150kW DC chargers. These chargers feature pioneering European technology and notably, stand among the first of their kind to be installed worldwide. This marks a major achievement for both Rubicon and Audi SA.”
