The electric vehicle (EV) market in South Africa is experiencing a surge in popularity, with Volvo’s recently launched EX30 playing a starring role.
Capturing nearly a third (30.8%) of all EV sales in the first four months of 2024, the EX30 has become the country’s best-selling electric car. This impressive performance has also propelled Volvo to a 46% share of the South African EV market during the same period.
Affordability and performance drive the EX30’s success
Several factors contribute to the EX30’s success. Starting at a competitive price of R775 900 the EX30 is one of South Africa’s most accessible fully electric vehicles. Furthermore, it offers strong performance, making it an attractive option for eco-conscious drivers.
Volvo’s broader EV strategy
The EX30’s success isn’t an isolated event. Volvo’s commitment to electrification extends across its entire South African line-up. This includes the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, contributing significantly to the brand’s market share. Additionally, Volvo maintains a strong presence in the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle segment, with the XC60 Recharge and XC90 Recharge models holding the top two spots in 2023.
Volvo is committed to a sustainable future
Volvo’s dedication to electrification reflects its global ambition for a sustainable future. To achieve half of its international sales volume as fully electric cars by 2025 and complete electrification by 2030, Volvo is a leader in the automotive industry’s transition towards zero-emission transportation.
