South African Rotax Max heats up at season midpoint

Close finishes and championship battles at the recent double-header regional rounds of the South African Rotax Max Challenge exhilarated fans all over. Read more here. 

The South African Rotax Max Challenge (SARMC) reached its exciting halfway point on the shortest day of the year over the weekend of June 22, with thrilling double-header regional rounds taking place in Gauteng (Zwartkops) and the Western Cape (Killarney).

Cape Town vs Gauteng battles

Senior Max: A tight three-way fight in Cape Town saw Luca Wehrli edge out Charl Visser and Tate Bishop for the overall win. Zwartkops mirrored the excitement with Mauro da Luz triumphing over Muhammad Wally and Kent Swartz.

DD2: Jason Coetzee dominated in Gauteng, taking all three wins from Nicolaus Vostanis and Olerato Sekudu. Down south, Joseph Oelz capitalised on Coetzee’s absence, securing victory ahead of Matthew Wadeley and Ethan Stier.

DD2 Masters: Justin Rogers reigned supreme in Gauteng, while Conor Hughes and Jared Jordan battled it out in Cape Town, with Hughes taking the slight edge.

Young guns shine bright

Junior Max: The future of South African karting showcased its talent with three winners in Cape Town and Gauteng. Jordon Wadeley, Keagan Beaumont and Nicholas Lennox impressed at Killarney, while Luke Hill, Gianna Pascoal and Cristian Verheul delivered a thrilling display at Zwartkops.

Micro Max: Liam Wharton stole the show at Killarney, overcoming Ruhan Victor and Michael O’Mahoney, while Zwartkops saw Matthew Shuttleworth take a clean sweep with Luhan de Wet and Adriaan Steyn hot on his heels.

Mini Max: Brodi Dowling edged out Renaldo Koen in Gauteng, while Max Boshoff dominated in Cape Town with a triple victory. Michael Danks secured second overall.

Bambino: The youngest racers also provided excitement. Radhi Harris emerged victorious at Killarney after a close battle with Caleb Lingeveldt, while Alonzo de Oliveira triumphed at Zwartkops despite Sebastien Shuttleworth winning two races.

Looking ahead

The best karters from all regions will now converge at Formula K in Benoni on July 6 for the penultimate round of the 2024 SARMC. The following national finals in August will crown the new South African champions and also determine the team that will represent the nation at the prestigious Rotax Max Grand Finals, the ‘Olympics of Karting’, held in Italy this October.
