Volvo drives forward with Breathe Battery Technologies partnership

Volvo Cars pioneers faster and more efficient charging experiences through its collaboration with Breathe Battery Technologies, marking another stride towards electrified mobility excellence.

In an ongoing commitment to innovation, Volvo Cars has joined forces with Breathe Battery Technologies to integrate cutting-edge charging software into its new generation of fully electric vehicles (EVs). This strategic partnership enhances Volvo’s charging technology, promising customers faster charging times and an elevated driving and charging experience.

By incorporating Breathe’s patented algorithm-enabled charging software into Volvo Cars’ proprietary battery management platform, significant improvements in charging efficiency are anticipated. Preliminary tests suggest this integration could reduce the charging time from 10% to 80% charge by up to 30%, all while maintaining energy density and range.

The collaboration with Breathe underscores Volvo’s dedication to leading the premium EV market and achieving its goal of becoming a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030. Breathe, a London-based start-up, shares Volvo’s vision for sustainable electrification, making it an ideal partner for this venture.

Ann-Sofie Ekberg, the CEO of the Volvo Cars Tech Fund, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating: “Faster charging times represent a significant advancement in our electric mobility journey, addressing a key concern for electric vehicle customers. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to enhancing the driver experience and making electric mobility accessible to more individuals.”

Breathe’s adaptive charging software revolutionises the charging process by dynamically controlling the battery in real time, ensuring shorter charging times while safeguarding battery health. This software-defined approach optimises performance without compromising longevity, aligning perfectly with Volvo’s sustainability objectives.

Dr Ian Campbell, the CEO of Breathe Battery Technologies, shares Volvo’s enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasising the potential for innovative car designs and performance enhancements. As Volvo’s EV sales continue to surge, the scalability of this technology ensures seamless integration across the product line-up.

Aligned with Volvo’s mission to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and adopt circular business practices by 2040, this partnership represents a crucial step towards a sustainable future. By prioritising faster charging without altering battery pack design or increasing environmental impact, Volvo reaffirms its commitment to responsible electrification.

The Volvo Cars Tech Fund, established in 2018, remains dedicated to investing in transformative technologies that reshape the automotive industry. Through strategic partnerships with pioneering companies like Breathe Battery Technologies, Volvo Cars continues to drive innovation and accelerate the global mobility transformation.
