Motorsport South Africa wins top award

This was a first and also involved the Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in the Eastern Cape.

For the first time in its history, Motorsport South Africa (MSA) has achieved the prestigious President’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Award from the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile).

The award recognizes MSA as the top FIA Member Organisation globally, for its exceptional commitment to implementing diverse and inclusive practices.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, announced that MSA secured this coveted award from among 22 member organisations worldwide. The accolade specifically acknowledges MSA’s remarkable initiatives at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School (DP) in Kariega, Eastern Cape.

Out of 44 projects submitted by FIA member clubs worldwide, MSA’s contribution to the Daniel Pienaar Technical High School Motorsport Initiative stood out. The initiative provides learners, regardless of race or gender, exposure to various aspects of motorsport, including rallying, mechanics, and administration roles. Notably, the programme’s inclusivity of girls and individuals from diverse backgrounds is recognised for promoting much-needed diversity in motorsport.

Daniel Pienaar Technical High School is not only the oldest technical school in South Africa, but also the only school in the country officially recognising motorsport as a school sport. It is among the three schools globally offering motorsport as an extra-curricular activity. With customised cars and the roar of engines, students experience the thrill of motorsport, making it a unique opportunity.

Anton Roux expressed gratitude for the work of Sparky Bright, MSA’s chairman of the safety and the technical panel, who played a crucial role in introducing motorsport to the school nearly two decades ago. Bright, along with Jimmy Murray, initiated the programme in 2004. MSA has been a steadfast supporter of the school, with success stories like Chassen Bright, Sparky’s son, who became a national karting champion and now works as an aftersales specialist for Hyundai Motorsport in Germany.

In conclusion, Roux stated, “We are honoured to accept this significant award and thank the FIA for the privilege. Our work at Daniel Pienaar highlights the need to foster a work environment that promotes the inclusion of diverse experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds, and removes barriers to the advancement of under-represented groups. We salute all of the students and teachers at DP and encourage them to keep up the excellent work.”
