It’s time to delve into the latest statistics and unveil the top 10 best-selling passenger brands for the month.
According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa’s data, September 2023 witnessed aggregate domestic new vehicle sales of 46 021 units. This figure marked a decline of 1 963 units compared to the 47 984 vehicles sold in September 2022. On the export front, there was a notable decrease as well, with 36 247 units exported in September 2023, down by 5 217 units from the 41 464 vehicles exported in the same month of the previous year.
Breaking down the total industry sales of 46 021 vehicles, it’s estimated that approximately 37 149 units were attributed to dealer sales, while roughly 6 241 units found their way into the vehicle rental industry. Additionally, 1 321 units were snapped up by industry corporate fleets, and another 1 310 units were designated for government use.

Toyota maintained its commanding lead in the charts, showing a significant edge over its closest rival. With a staggering 7 161 vehicles sold in the local market. The star of Toyota’s line-up continues to be the Corolla Cross, retaining its position as Toyota’s top-selling passenger vehicle. Last month alone, Toyota sold an impressive 2 259 units of the Corolla Cross. Another strong contender in Toyota’s passenger segment was the Toyota Starlet, which garnered a notable 1 247 sales.

Volkswagen, on the other hand, put up a commendable fight in September, boasting 5 748 units sold. The Polo Vivo emerged as Volkswagen’s best-seller, with a remarkable 2 698 units finding new owners, while the Polo hatch contributed with 1 148 units sold. An astonishing highlight is the export figure for the Polo hatch, which reached an impressive 11 402 units.
