South Africans have a strong affection for SUVs and bakkies, and according to AutoTrader’s car sales data for the first half of 2023, the most sold used SUV in the country is the Toyota Fortuner.

The data not only breaks down sales by body type, but also reveals the top-selling used car models within each category.

In the first six months of this year, SUVs accounted for a significant 33% of all used car sales. The Toyota Fortuner, listed on AutoTrader with an average price of R465 196, an average mileage of 105 428km, and an average age of six years, claimed the top spot among used SUVs in South Africa.

Following closely behind is the Ford EcoSport, while the Jeep Wrangler, ranking third, stands out as an unexpected contender in the top three lists.

Hatchbacks made up a substantial 26% of used car sales among all body types. It comes as no surprise that three Volkswagen models secured the top three positions in this category. The Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen Polo Vivo took the first and second places, respectively. Interestingly, the Volkswagen Golf, ranking third in used hatchback sales for the first half of 2023, also held the second position as the most searched-for car model during the same period.

Double-cabs accounted for 11% of total sales across all body types, with the Ford Ranger leading the pack as the most sold used double-cab, boasting an average price of R479 786. Following closely behind is the Toyota Hilux, with an average price of R532 672, and the Volkswagen Amarok secured the third spot with an average price of R571 726. According to market data, these same three bakkies were also the top three most viewed double-cab models in 2022, albeit in a different order.

Interestingly, when examining single-cab sales data, a different picture emerges. The Toyota Hilux takes the top spot in this category, with an average price of R301 143. The Nissan NP200 follows closely behind, with the Ford Ranger relegated to the third position, averaging R244 568. Single-cabs accounted for 6% of total sales among all body types.

Sedans and coupes accounted for 12% and 2% of total sales, respectively. It is worth noting the enduring popularity of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in these categories. With an average price of R420 455, it is the most sold used sedan, while the coupe version of this model also claims the top spot as the most sold coupe, with an average listing price of R511 994.
