Honda expands CR-V range with new Hybrid Sport-L derivative

Honda’s flagship SUV will now be offered with a new hybrid Sport-L derivative in a growing line-up – but only for the American market.

Honda has introduced the new hybrid Sport-L model into their CR-V range for the American market. Positioned between the CR-V EX-L and Sport Touring grades, the CR-V Sport-L offers both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.

In terms of design, the new trim level features gloss black exterior details, rectangular exhaust outlets, and black 18-inch wheels. Inside the cabin, leather seats, a power-adjustable front passenger chair, and a power tailgate come as standard. The infotainment system boasts a nine-inch screen with support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a wireless charging pad and an eight-speaker stereo.

The hybrid powertrain of the CR-V remains unchanged, featuring a two-liter four-cylinder engine combined with two electric motors. This configuration delivers a total system output of 152kW  and 334N.m. Honda has shared that hybrid-equipped trim levels account for over 50% of CR-V sales in the American market begging the question of whether the Japanese automaker should introduce the powertrain into the South African market to contend in the growing new energy vehicle (NEV) segment.

At present, only three grades are offered in South Africa including the 2.0 Comfort CVT, 2.0 Elegance CVT and 1.5T Executive CVT which includes an AWD derivative. The naturally aspirated two-litre four-cylinder motor puts out 113kW and 189N.m while the turbocharged 1.5-litre unit is capable of 140kW and 240N.m.

Honda has not made any comment on whether the derivative will arrive in South Africa, so for the time being the three grades of the premium SUV flagship will remain unchanged.
