4×4 Jamboree an absolute ball

The word "jamboree" was first use in the Scouting movement and was coined by Baden-Powell in 1920. It refers to a large, lavish and boisterous celebration.

The past weekend’s 4×4 Jamboree held at Klipspringer Lodge was perhaps not as large as was hoped for, but in spirit, the 4×4 event was lavish and exciting. It presented participants with three non-competitive (really) exercises: a man-made obstacle course with some fun challenges, a skid pan gymkhana and a short route with some natural rocky obstacles.

One of the fun challenges was driving your vehicle through an axle twister while the blinded co-driver had to balance a serving tray with two glasses of water, not using his body as a stabiliser. Not an easy feat for most and frankly, the ladies co-drivers did much better than the menfolk.

Participating vehicles ranged from a very old Land Cruiser to the latest in Jeep attire.

Steeper than the photo depicts, this required excellent clutch and throttle for manual transmission cars…

Barring some minor challenges here and there, and the normal banter and teasing that is so characteristic of these events, it was a good off-the-cuff event, one which most certainly once again reminded participants of one of the first and fundamental procedures in 4×4-ing: to deflate your vehicle’s tyre pressure. Even just half a bar will escalate vehicle rock crawling ability quite significantly.

Before the driver could enter this obstacle, the co-driver had to find two small red balls.

Music, good food and some spot prizes brought the day to a close. The venue is perfect for a weekend of family fun, adventure and more.
