Road users are urged to be even more vigilant this festive season

The Nkomazi Local Municipality (NLM) urges motorists making use of the N4 and roads in its jurisdiction to be vigilant at all times.

MALALANE -This call comes ahead of the festive season which is the busiest period on the roads in the Nkomazi subregion, and also in the light of the numerous accidents happening on the N4 and other roads in the municipality.

NLM spokesman, Mr Cyril Ripinga, explained that as a municipality they were ready for the heavy traffic volumes, however, they needed drivers to play their part as well.

He said, “Our traffic law-enforcement officers are ready, the festive season is among the busiest times on our roads. Many will be making their way home, be it via public transport or private, the numbers of vehicles on the roads will increase significantly. However, traffic officers can only do so much and be at certain points at a given time, this is where we need drivers to play their part.”

Ripinga continued to say that as much as they are pleading with motorists to respect the rules of the road, they would not show any kindness to offenders.

He said,”Every year we hear of horrific accidents resulting from motorists failing to obey the rules of the road, and every year at this time we make it our objective to show no mercy to those who do so. This year shall be no different, traffic law breakers will be fined and even arrested, should it be deemed necessary.”

Last week six people died and were burnt beyond recognition when the driver of a taxi, believed to be travelling to Mozambique, collided with a bakkie on the N4. Furthermore this past weekend another taxi driver travelling to Mozambique reportedly lost control and overturned on the N4. However there were no serious injuries or fatalities.
