Woman killed in mudslide as flash floods close South Coast beaches

A woman died in a mudslide as flash floods hit the South Coast, while several beaches remain closed due to poor water quality.

A woman died in a mudslide during a flash flood on Sunday.

South Coast Herald reports she has been identified as Thuli Cele (63) of Nyandezulu in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s (RKM) Ward 24, about 9km inland of Shelly Beach.

Cele had been at a neighbour’s house when the mudslide occurred, claiming her life.

Premier visits family

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli visited the family at their home.

He was joined by Ugu Mayor Skhumbuzo Mqadi, RNM Mayor Zodwa Mzindle and RNM Speaker Phumlani Gumbi.

Beach closures and water quality

Meanwhile, South Coast Sun reports that despite improved water visibility following recent rainfall, Doonside Beach has been closed for bathing after water quality tests confirmed exceptionally high E. coli levels.

According to Ward 97 councillor André Beetge, visibility remains poor at Winklespruit and Isipingo beaches, while post-rain testing has revealed elevated E. coli counts, resulting in both beaches remaining closed for bathing.

While visibility at Umgababa Beach has not yet improved, E. coli levels are currently low and the beach may be reopened once water visibility reaches safe levels.

Reunion, Pipeline and Amanzimtoti Main beaches are currently open for bathing.

Authorities will continue to monitor water quality and visibility and will issue further updates as conditions change.
