Watch: Sub-Antarctic fur seal visits Richards Bay
A conservation agency and the local NSRI are monitoring the situation, but it seems to be an annual late-winter phenomenon.
A sub-Antarctic fur seal has made an appearance on Richards Bay’s shores after beaching in the area this week.
A video sent to the Zululand Observer this morning shows a seemingly healthy seal perched on the rocks. It appears calm and relaxed, scratching itself with its flipper, as the person filming the video approaches.
The stranding of sub-Antarctic fur seals in Richards Bay seems to be an annual late-winter phenomenon, typically occurring in late August and/or September.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife confirmed the species of the seal and stated that they are monitoring it while considering further actions. They added that it is common for seals to beach at this time of year when chasing sardines.
The public is advised not to approach the seal but to observe it from a distance and contact the Richards Bay NSRI, who are collaborating with Ezemvelo in monitoring the situation.
