Watch: Rare spotted eagle rays mating sighting stuns Ballito beachgoers
When rescue teams rushed to save ‘trapped sharks’ in Ballito, they discovered a rare natural wonder: A pair of elusive spotted eagle rays in a mating ritual.
A rare sighting of two spotted eagle rays mating in a rocky inlet between Clarke Bay and the Ballito tidal pool on Tuesday (February 11) stunned beachgoers and conservationists alike.
Specialised Rescue Unit (SRU) commander Quentin Power said the team visited the site after reports from people on the beach, reports North Coast Courier.
“We responded to reports that some sharks were trapped in a rock pool,” said Power.
“The team responded with the necessary equipment to safely return them to the sea. However, when we arrived, we realised they were not sharks, they were spotted eagle rays showing signs of courting and mating behaviour.”
This footage above was filmed by researcher James, and Quentin Power of the Specialised Rescue Unit on February 10, 2026.
The spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) is a cartilaginous fish found across tropical regions of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Although they are sometimes seen in groups, they are most commonly solitary, making the sighting of a mating pair close to shore particularly unusual.
Known by various names, including white‑spotted eagle ray, bonnet ray and duckbill ray, the species is considered one of the more elusive large rays in coastal waters. They prefer to swim in waters of 24-27°C, which is perfect conditions in KZN’s waters at this time of year.
Power explained that shallow, protected bays such as this rocky stretch of Ballito coastline offer the rays temporary refuge from predators – mostly sharks – while they carry out their mating ritual.
After observing the pair for several minutes and noting that neither was injured or distressed, the SRU decided that no intervention was required.
“We helped enlighten the spectators to the process and asked them not to interfere with them, but just enjoy the special event, which makes spectacular spectator entertainment if you get to see it,” added Power.
