Watch: Brazen daylight carjacking caught on camera

Watch how a routine trip to the shop turned into a heart-stopping carjacking in broad daylight.

CCTV footage has emerged showing the precision and audacity of a carjacking gang in the Western Cape this week.

The 48-second clip, which was shared by Cape Flats Stories, captures the moment the family’s morning routine was shattered in seconds.

The incident occurred at around 07:00 on Tuesday on Seafarer Drive, Strandfontein. The footage highlights the brazenness of the attackers, who are seen sprinting down a residential street toward their target, despite the morning hour and the presence of witnesses.

According to the Cape Flats Stories post, the victims were a correctional services officer and her family. This has not been officially confirmed, however.

The footage

The video shows a Renault Sandero parked outside a local tuckshop, situated directly opposite a T-junction. As the suspects run toward the car, they move with a speed that suggests a co-ordinated strike. Within moments, they have taken the vehicle and are driving off, leaving the victims standing in the street.

The footage also captures the chaotic environment of the crime; during the struggle, a white minibus taxi is seen speeding through the T-junction. The taxi fails to stop at the stop sign, presumably to avoid becoming a secondary victim. The occupants of a car parked nearby appear to wait until the hijackers have fled before approaching the scene.

Official investigation

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the spokesperson for the Western Cape police, confirmed that Strandfontein police are investigating a case of carjacking.

“The suspects robbed the victim of his Renault Sandero in Seafarer Drive, Bayview, before fleeing the scene,” Twigg says.

He confirmed that the hijackers approached the victim while he was at the shop, demanding the vehicle before making their escape.

The Strandfontein CPF describes the incident as ‘shocking,’ noting that it serves as a stark reminder for all South Africans to remain vigilant regardless of the time of day.

“Check your surroundings before getting into your vehicle, even when pulling up at home at any time of the day,” the CPF urged in a statement.

The forum also highlighted a worrying trend where community members are experiencing an increase in theft but are failing to register cases.

They warned that failing to report these crimes stretches policing resources and hides the true scale of the national crime problem.

Anyone with information regarding the suspects or the whereabouts of the vehicle is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile app anonymously.
