Watch: 10 Buscor buses destroyed in overnight Barberton fire
The blackened shells of Buscor buses tell a tale of devastation as flames spread from bus to bus.
Ten Buscor buses were destroyed by a fire last night at an overnight storage area in Barberton next to the provincial hospital.
Lowvelder reports that forensic investigators are on site to assess the extent of the damage and determine the cause of the fire.
Fire spread rapidly through depot
According to Buscor spokesperson Thomas Lubisi, the blaze originated from one of the buses before rapidly spreading to others parked nearby.
He confirmed that 10 buses were lost.
“We managed to save one bus that had already caught fire. The flames were extinguished before it was completely destroyed,” said Lubisi. He added that firefighters managed to contain the flames before they could spread any further, preventing additional vehicle damage.
“Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the scene.”
Lubisi said the company has deployed replacement buses to the area to ensure commuters are transported to their destinations as usual.
MEC welcomes no injuries
Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport Thulasizwe Thomo said he is relieved that, at this stage, no injuries or loss of life have been reported.
He said the department is awaiting a full report from Buscor, including preliminary findings on the cause of the fire, while relevant authorities conduct their investigations.
Thomo emphasised the importance of strict adherence to safety, fire prevention and risk management measures at all public transport facilities, including depots and yards.
“As we move through this peak season, it is critical that all public transport operators heighten safety standards, ensure regular inspections of facilities and vehicles, and have clear emergency response plans in place,” said Thomo.
Police open inquiry
According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, police in Barberton have opened an inquiry following the fire.
“Circumstances surrounding this incident have not yet been established and will form part of the inquiry. Police urge anyone who might have information in this inquiry to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via the MySAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential, and callers may opt to remain anonymous.”
Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi said police will work to determine what led to the blaze.
“We have taken note of the statement issued by the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport. We will ensure that the established team works diligently, and for now, we cannot rule out any possibilities,” said the general.
