Watch: 1 dies in Germiston old age home fire, 50 more evacuated

Emergency services worked hard to contain a blaze that has destroyed 30% of an old age home.

Residents of Die Anker Tehuis old age home in Germiston are homeless after a large section of the home burnt down.

Emergency services responded to the incident after the building caught fire at 08:45 today.

One person died and more than 50 residents were evacuated.

The home is trying to place the elderly in temporary accommodation.

Firefighters contained the blaze and managed to save 70% of the building, however, it remains a no-go zone as its structural integrity is a concern.

One of the elderly residents was assisted by paramedics at the scene and at least four others were transported to hospital for smoke inhalation.

At least 30 residents have been displaced and were transported to a nearby school where they are being safely cared for while the home makes the necessary arrangements.
