Video: Limpopo cops in hot water over use of siren

Two police officers are under investigation for sounding their vehicle's siren after accepting a drink from a hawker in Musina.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has instructed Vhembe district commissioner Major General Eddie van Der Walt to launch a thorough investigation into the conduct of two police officers captured in a viral TikTok video.

The video shows a SAPS vehicle parked next to a bakkie in Musina, where a local hawker offers the officers a brown drink from a 5l bottle. The officer in the passenger seat accepts the drink, consumes it, and hands the empty cup back to the hawker, who then pours a glass for the driver. The hawker can then be heard requesting the officers to activate the vehicle’s siren, which they do briefly before driving off. A group of onlookers can be seen witnessing the exchange, as the hawker walks away excitedly.

Hadebe has called for the investigation to ensure that appropriate disciplinary action is taken against the officers, in accordance with SAPS Discipline Regulations and the code of conduct.

“The provincial police commissioner has noted with concern the police officials’ alleged conduct as seen in a video circulating on various social media platforms. The video showcased the police officials, allegedly from Vhembe district, participating in a marketing campaign by using a SAPS-marked vehicle and siren,” says police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.

According to SAPS discipline regulations, officers are guilty of misconduct if they breach the code of conduct of the service or public service. The SAPS code of conduct states that officers must ‘utilise all available resources responsibly, efficiently, and cost-effectively to maximise their use’.
