A large-scale, suspected crystal methamphetamine manufacturing operation has been dismantled after Hawks members, working alongside multiple SAPS units, carried out a joint operation on a farm outside Musina in the Vhembe District, reports Polokwane Review.

Police moved in late on Thursday, August 20, after receiving intelligence about the site. Units involved included the South African Narcotics Bureau, Crime Intelligence, Hawks Limpopo, the Special Task Force, the Drug Enforcement Agency and US Department of Homeland Security.

Third lab shut down in Limpopo

Five people were taken into custody at the scene. Officers also recovered drugs and manufacturing equipment estimated to be worth R600m on the street, along with a substantial sum of cash that has not yet been disclosed.

Authorities say this marks the third such laboratory dismantled in the province.

Two-month investigation preceded raid

According to police, the raid was the result of a two-month investigation into suspected drug production at the farm, which allegedly formed part of a large, industrial-style operation geared toward supplying illicit substances to wider markets.

Those arrested range in age from 20 to 47 and include two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and a Malawian national.

“Nowhere to hide,” says Hawks

Limpopo Hawks Provincial Head Major General Adv Gopz Govender said the raid should serve as a warning to organised crime groups operating in the region.

“We have struck at the machinery behind the drug trade. This R600m seizure is not merely a quantity of drugs taken off the streets; it represents the disruption of an entire criminal enterprise. We will follow the money, the networks and every person connected to this operation. There will be nowhere to hide.”

SAPS vows decisive action

Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers added that the operation underscores police commitment to keeping drug syndicates out of local communities.

“We will not allow our communities to become markets for criminal syndicates. Those who manufacture and distribute these dangerous substances must know that law enforcement is closing in on them. This operation demonstrates that we will act decisively against the drug trade.”

The five suspects are due to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday (August 24) on charges linked to the alleged manufacture and possession of illicit drugs.

Investigators say further charges may still be added.
