The gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) case from Vosman, Emalahleni, involving Abongile Allessing has been reinstated on the court roll.

The suspect, a 42-year-old man, is scheduled to appear in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on September 6.

The case concerns an assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as reported by 38-year-old Allessing on August 4.

Following the initial arrest, the case was removed from the court roll, leading to the suspect’s release. This sparked outrage and garnered significant support for the victim from the community.

However, the investigation team, in collaboration with prosecutors, has worked to have the case reinstated.

In addition, allegations of a delayed police response to the incident are being investigated internally. The SAPS emphasised its commitment to prompt responses to GBVF cases, ensuring the safety and well-being of victims.

Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi acknowledged the public’s support for the victim but urged against interference with the investigation and prosecution.

“We plead with members of society to allow the team space to conduct due diligence on this case without distraction. We understand that this is a sensitive issue, which is being attended to by the relevant stakeholders. The team is working together professionally to ensure justice is served. We do not want a situation where we lose focus and unnecessarily create loopholes for the suspect to walk free. While we would have preferred an earlier date, we are pleased that the wheels of justice are moving in the right direction,” said Mkhwanazi.

Emalahleni Mayor Vusi Nhlapo, and the MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, visited Allessing at Witbank General Hospital recently.

Nhlapo emphasised the need for community support to prevent GBV and to encourage victims to speak out without fear of discouragement.
