Van bombed, money stolen in KZN cash-in-transit heist

Police in Hlabisa are appealing to witnesses to come forward after armed robbers opened fire on a cash-in-transit vehicle.

Two security guards were reportedly disarmed, the vehicle in which they were travelling bombed, and money stolen during a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Mtubatuba, KZN, on Saturday evening.

Reports indicate the CIT heist in the Qubuka area, along the R618, involved five robbers who are said to have opened fire on the armoured vehicle, damaging one of its tyres which forced it to stop.

Surrounded by the robbers, it is alleged the driver and two armed guards were forced out of the vehicle before being robbed.

The police confirmed the robbery and said no one was injured during the incident.

“The [robbers] were using two vehicles – a white Toyota GD-6 single cab and a blue double cab Ford Ranger.

“They fled the scene in both vehicles after loading the money in the double cab, and headed north on a gravel road towards the Gunjaneni area,” says police spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or Hlabisa SAPS on 082 5580130.
