Update: Drowning disaster off Pennington main beach — 3 dead, 3 missing, 1 rescued

Rescue teams today continued to scour KZN South Coast and Ballito beaches for missing swimmers.

Rescue teams today continued the search for three missing people at Pennington main beach on the south coast of KZN.

As reported by South Coast Herald earlier today, the ongoing search extended along the coastline and out to sea.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Craig Lambinon said that during the search yesterday, it was determined that there are three men, all believed to be aged 21, still missing.

Then, during the search yesterday, an 18-year-old woman was found dead at Bazley Beach.

It was determined by police that the woman was among those who had gone missing off Pennington main beach.

To recap:

  • One female teenager (18) was rescued on the evening of January 1, not injured.
  • One man (21) was found dead during the initial search operation on the evening of January 1.
  • One man (21) was found dead later by police on the beach near Pennington on January 1 at 21:30.
  • One woman (18) washed up dead at Bazley Beach yesterday morning.
  • Three men, all believed to be aged 21, are still missing, presumed drowned.

According to the NSRI, the group got into distress in the surf zone near the tidal pool at Pennington beach.

It is believed that all involved are from KZN.

Man missing in Ballito

According to The Witness, in a separate incident in Ballito, IPSS Search and Rescue teams and KwaDukuza lifeguards were searching the coastline for a man who went missing while swimming at Thompson’s Bay Beach yesterday morning.

Search crews were using jet skis and boats to locate the missing swimmer.

“Conditions are not ideal, as the wind has picked up, which may hamper search efforts as the day progresses,” Meyrick said at the time of publishing.
